What to expect.
Students study a broad range of literature including novels, plays, poetry and short stories from different periods and cultures. They develop analytical essay writing skills, explore a variety of non-fiction text types and refine their creative writing. Lessons are discussion-rich, encouraging independent thought and the confidence to express ideas with clarity and conviction.
Topics covered.
Literature study
Novels, plays and poetry from Shakespeare to modern authors. Close reading, character analysis, theme exploration and contextual understanding.
Analytical writing
Structured essay writing: introduction, argument, evidence, analysis and conclusion. Building the skills needed for IGCSE literature essays.
Creative writing
Narrative, descriptive and persuasive writing. Developing voice, style, structure and the ability to write for different audiences and purposes.
Non-fiction & media
Analysing articles, speeches, advertisements and digital media. Understanding bias, rhetoric and how language is used to influence.
Spoken language
Formal presentations, group discussions and debates. Building confidence in public speaking and structured argument.
Grammar & accuracy
Advanced punctuation, sentence variety, paragraphing and proofreading. Accuracy as the foundation of effective communication.

How progress is measured.
Marked essays and creative pieces returned with detailed feedback. Half-term assessments cover reading comprehension and writing. Termly reports track progress toward IGCSE readiness.
Where it leads.
KS3 English leads directly into IGCSE English Language and IGCSE English Literature at KS4, where students sit Cambridge International examinations.
