What to expect.
Students prepare for the Cambridge IGCSE Spanish (0530) examination through immersive lessons, structured grammar and vocabulary study, and regular exam practice. All four skills are developed in parallel: listening, reading, writing and speaking. Learning is organised around five topic areas — everyday activities, personal and social life, the world around us, the world of work and the international world — giving students real insight into the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.
Topics covered.
Listening
Understanding spoken Spanish — dialogues, announcements, news items and conversations. Identifying main points, detail, opinion and attitude (Paper 1).
Reading
Comprehension of authentic Spanish texts: articles, emails, adverts and messages. Selecting detail and deducing unknown words from context (Paper 2).
Speaking
A role play and conversations on two topics. Building fluency, pronunciation, intonation and spontaneous response (Paper 3).
Writing
Form-filling, directed writing and an email, letter, article or blog in Spanish. Accuracy, range and connected ideas (Paper 4).
Everyday & social life
Topic areas A and B: time, food and drink, health, travel, family and friends, the home, clothes and leisure.
The wider world
Topic areas C, D and E: the environment and technology, education and work, and countries, languages, customs and celebrations.

How progress is measured.
Cambridge IGCSE Spanish (0530) is assessed by four papers, each worth 25%: Paper 1 Listening (approx. 50 minutes, 40 marks), Paper 2 Reading (1 hour, 45 marks), Paper 3 Speaking (approx. 10 minutes, 40 marks — one role play and conversations on two topics) and Paper 4 Writing (1 hour, 45 marks). At BOS, students sit regular timed papers and mock speaking tests marked to Cambridge standard, with termly reports tracking predicted grades.
Where it leads.
IGCSE Spanish builds proficiency towards CEFR A2/B1 and leads to A-Level Spanish. It is highly valued for university applications, international careers and life in the Spanish-speaking world.
