What to expect.
Students learn to read with precision, write with clarity and communicate with purpose. Following the Cambridge IGCSE First Language English (0500) syllabus, the course builds reading comprehension and analysis across a wide range of text types, directed writing for a specific audience and purpose, composition (narrative and descriptive writing) and summary skills. Learners read literary, fiction and non-fiction texts from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, then use them to inform and inspire their own writing. Regular timed practice builds the speed and accuracy needed for exam success.
Topics covered.
Reading comprehension & analysis
Reading three texts closely for explicit and implicit meaning, analysing how writers achieve effects and influence readers, and selecting evidence to develop ideas (AO1 Reading).
Summary skills
Identifying key points across a passage, selecting relevant information and writing concise, accurate summaries in your own words for a specific context.
Directed writing
Letters, reports, articles, speeches, reviews and interviews. Adapting tone, register and form for a specific audience and purpose, using ideas from a reading text.
Narrative composition
Writing original stories with effective openings, characterisation, tension, dialogue and satisfying conclusions, structured for deliberate effect (AO2 Writing).
Descriptive composition
Sensory detail, atmosphere, imagery and structural techniques. Crafting vivid descriptions of places, people and moments.
Speaking & listening
Delivering an individual talk and taking part in conversation: communicating clearly and fluently, using register appropriate to context and responding to others (AO3, separately endorsed).

How progress is measured.
Cambridge IGCSE First Language English (0500). All candidates sit Paper 1: Reading (2 hours, 80 marks, 50%) with structured and extended questions on three reading texts. They then take either Paper 2: Directed Writing and Composition (2 hours, 80 marks, 50%) or, as a coursework route, Component 3: Coursework Portfolio of three extended writing assignments (50%, internally assessed and externally moderated). The Speaking and Listening Test (Component 4) is optional and separately endorsed — its marks do not contribute to the overall grade. At BOS, every essay is marked to Cambridge grade boundaries with detailed feedback, and students sit full mock papers each term.
Where it leads.
Cambridge IGCSE First Language English is a core qualification recognised by universities, employers and sixth forms worldwide, and is benchmarked as comparable to a UK GCSE. It is often a requirement for A-Level study in any subject and a strong foundation for Cambridge International AS & A Level English Language.
