1. Introduction

The British Online School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children and young people.

Safeguarding refers to protecting children from maltreatment, preventing impairment of health or development, ensuring children grow up in safe and effective care, and taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes.

Child protection refers to protecting individual children identified as suffering, or likely to suffer, significant harm.

2. Safeguarding statement

The British Online School fully recognises its moral and statutory responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of all pupils. We aim to provide a safe, supportive and respectful online environment where pupils are listened to and valued. All staff have a duty to act immediately on any safeguarding concern. Safeguarding is everyone's responsibility.

3. Legal framework

The School follows UK safeguarding principles and has regard to Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE). These standards are applied as best practice across all jurisdictions in which pupils are located.

4. Online school context

The British Online School is a fully online international school. Safeguarding is embedded across all digital teaching, communication and learning environments, including live lessons and online platforms.

5. Promoting pupil welfare

The School promotes pupil welfare by:

  • Providing a safe and supportive learning environment
  • Maintaining a zero-tolerance approach to bullying, discrimination and abuse
  • Supporting pupil wellbeing through curriculum and pastoral care
  • Ensuring staff are trained in safeguarding procedures
  • Working closely with parents and guardians

6. Reporting safeguarding concerns

All staff must report safeguarding concerns immediately to the DSL or DDSL. Concerns may include (but are not limited to):

  • Suspected abuse or neglect
  • Emotional or behavioural changes
  • Online safety concerns
  • Peer-on-peer abuse
  • Radicalisation or exploitation concerns

Upon receiving a concern, the DSL will assess risk and determine appropriate action. External safeguarding agencies will be contacted where necessary. Staff must not investigate concerns themselves. All concerns will be recorded securely.

7. Child protection action

Where a child is considered at risk of harm, the School may:

  • Contact external safeguarding authorities or equivalent agencies
  • Take immediate steps to protect the child
  • Temporarily restrict access to lessons if required
  • Work with parents and external professionals

8. Allegations against staff

All allegations against staff are taken seriously. Where concerns arise, the School will:

  • Report concerns to the DSL or appropriate safeguarding authority
  • Follow external safeguarding procedures where required
  • Ensure appropriate risk management, including possible suspension
  • Take disciplinary action where appropriate

9. Record keeping

The School maintains secure safeguarding records including written reports, communications and relevant lesson recordings. Access is strictly limited to authorised safeguarding personnel.

10. Online safety

The School maintains robust online safety measures including secure platforms, controlled access to virtual classrooms and monitored communication systems. Lesson recordings may be used for safeguarding and quality assurance purposes.

11. Prevent duty

The School complies with the UK Prevent Duty under the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015. We take appropriate action to protect pupils from radicalisation and extremist influence.

12. Equality and vulnerable children

The School recognises that some pupils may be more vulnerable to harm. We ensure equal safeguarding protection for all pupils regardless of background, location or personal circumstances.

13. International safeguarding context

As an international online school, The British Online School applies UK safeguarding standards as a minimum expectation. Where necessary, we work with relevant safeguarding authorities in the jurisdiction of the pupil.

14. Policy review

This policy is reviewed annually and updated in line with safeguarding guidance and operational requirements.
